EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State women's crew head coach Bebe Bryans was named the co- Big Ten Rowing Coach of the Year on Tuesday. Bryans, who led her team to a second-place finish at the first ever Big Ten Championships, shared the honors with Michigan coach Mark Rothstein. The women's rowing honors are selected by a vote of the head coaches.
Also honored by the Big Ten were seniors Renee Olin (Northville, Mich.) and Elizabeth Shuster (Troy, Mich.). Olin and Shuster were both named First-Team All-Big Ten. Both Shuster and Olin are members of the varsity eight crew which placed second at the Big Ten Championships.
Olin and Shuster were not the only Spartan rowers to receive accolades. Senior Angela Lound (Holland, Mich.) and junior Nicole DeMott (Rogers, Minn.) were named Second-Team All-Big Ten. Lound and DeMott are also members of the varsity eight crew.
"I am proud that our women were recognized for their accomplishments," said Bryans. "One of the benefits of having a Big Ten Championship is that we are able to honor individual rowers. I am surprised and honored to be named co-Big Ten Coach of the Year. We have an extraordinary group of coaches in the Big Ten and I am honored to be recognized by them. I look forward to the addition of Minnesota and coach Wendy Davis to the conference next season."
Coming off a second-place finish at the Big Ten Championships, Michigan State will next row in the Central Regionals, on May 13 in Oak Ridge, Tenn. Big Ten Schools Indiana, Iowa, Michigan and Ohio State will be among the competitors at the Central Regionals.
