Camden County, N.J. - Michigan State finished eighth at the 2000 NCAA Rowing Championship in Camden Country, N.J. The Spartans used strong petite final finishes from their second varsity eight and varsity eight boats on Sunday to score 18 points, just two points out of seventh place. The team finish equals MSU's placing from last season when it made its first team appearance at the NCAA Championship.
"We had a great day of racing, they really stepped up and put on their best performance today," MSU coach Bebe Bryans said. "The second varsity eight had a great race, leading from start to finish and the varsity eight turned in an outstanding performance as well.
"Overall, I have to be pleased with our performance. We are not there yet, but we have improved. We were more competitive this time around than we were last year. Even though we finished the same as a team, we really were more competitive and closer to the top teams and that's what we're striving for."
The second varsity eight took first place in the petite final for an overall finish of seventh. The Spartans posted a time of 7:07.70 in the race, easily edging out runner-up Harvard (7:12.79).
MSU's varsity eight boat was second to Boston University in the petite final for an overall finish of eighth in the nation. The showing is two places higher than last season's 10th-place finish.
The Spartans' varsity four boat finished fourth in the petite final (10th overall) with a time of 8:18.70.
