EAST LANSING, Mich. - -Michigan State women's golfer Emily Bastel (So., Upper Sandusky, Ohio) was named National Collegiate Player of the Week by Golf World Magazine for the week of May 1. She earned the honor after winning the Big Ten individual title and a spot on the All-Big Ten Team for the second straight year. Bastel, who was the Big Ten Freshman of the Year last season, has a 75.84 stroke average and four top-five finishes this season. Her medalist honor at the Big Ten Championship was the first tournament victory of her career.
Bastel fired a four-day total of 78-69-71-70=288 for the championship en route to helping the Spartans secure a second-place team finish. Her second-round of 69 was her MSU career-low and earns her a place in Spartan history as just the second player to shoot a round in the 60's. Her total of 288 set a new Big Ten Tournament individual record, shattering the old mark of 292. Bastel was also the first Spartans women's golfer to win the Big Ten individual title.
Next weekend, May 11-13, the No. 21 Spartans will compete in the NCAA East Regional in Columbus, Ohio at the par-72, 6,037-yard Scarlet Course.
