EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State freshman outfielder Bob Malek (Detroit, Mich./Detroit Central Catholic) was named to the 2000 Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American team on Wednesday, June 7. The All-American team was selected by Collegiate Baseball newspaper.
Malek finished the 2000 season with a .345 average and a team-best nine home runs and 58 RBI. He also led the team in slugging percentage (.545) and total bases (109), while finishing second on the squad in batting average, hits (69), doubles (9) and triples (2). For his efforts, Malek earned a spot on the All-Big Ten second team.
"I've been around college baseball for a long time and Bob Malek had the best freshman season I ever had the pleasure of watching," said Michigan State head coach Ted Mahan. "It's an honor for him to be named freshman All-American, but it's one that he worked very hard to achieve. I am very happy for him and I think this bodes well for both him and Michigan State baseball in the years to come."
