ESAT LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State seniors Charlie Bell (Flint, Mich.) and Andre Hutson (Trotwood, Ohio) have been included in the Top 50 Preseason Candidates for the 2000-01 John R. Wooden Award and All-America team. The John R. Wooden Award is the nation's preeminent trophy given annually to the most outstanding college basketball player in the United States. The Wooden Award program also recognizes the 10-man All-American Team.
Bell (6-3, 200), a 2000 third-team All-Big Ten selection, averaged 11.5 points and 4.9 rebounds as a junior during the 1999-2000 season. In December 1999, he scored at least 20 points in three straight games, becoming the first Spartan to accomplish that feat since November 1995. A three-year starter, he ranks 29th on the MSU career scoring chart with 1,022 points.
Hutson (6-8, 240) is one of the premier power forwards in the Big Ten. The top rebounder on the nation's best rebounding team in 1999-2000, Hutson averaged 6.2 boards per game. On the season, he collected eight double-doubles, third most in the Big Ten. He currently ranks No. 4 on the MSU career field goal percentage chart (.602) and No. 8 in blocked shots (58). With 952 career points, Hutson needs 48 more to become the 30th Spartan to reach the 1,000-point mark.
Each summer, the John R. Wooden Award office samples a committee of its voters from across the nation as to which players should be highlighted in the preseason as potential finalists (Wooden Award All-Americans) for the John R. Wooden Award. The committee selects 50 players and lists them alphabetically.
To be named to the Wooden Award All-American Team or to be the recipient of the Wooden Award Trophy, a player must be making progress towards graduation and carry a cumulative grade average of at least 2.0. Voters are asked to consider a player's contribution to his team and his character when voting for the All-American Team or Player of the Year honors.
On March 27, 2001, the ten player Wooden Award All-American team will be announced. The 25th Anniversary John R. Wooden Award will be presented on Friday, April 6, 2001 from The Los Angeles Athletic Club.
