Women's Soccer Defeats Detroit-Mercy Titans 3-0

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State women's soccer team shut out the Detroit-Mercy Titans 3-0 this afternoon in East Lansing, reaching their third win of the 2000 season. With this win, the Spartans improve their overall record to 3-0, marking their best start to a season since 1995 when they opened with a 4-0 record under coach Tom Saxton. Detroit-Mercy drops to 1-2.
Spartan freshman Trisha Kenny (Saginaw, Mich.) scored the first goal during the twentieth minute of the game. Scoring the goal unassisted, Kenny took the rebound from a previous shot off the post, counting towards her 3 shots on goal for the game. Junior Erin Stohl (Westland, Mich.) scored the second goal at 38:19, assisted by junior defender Nicole LePlae (Brighton, Mich.).
Michigan State senior forward Gina Dawson (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) scored the final goal of the game unassisted at the 59:41 mark of the second period.
The Spartans played aggressively, having 15 shots on goal compared to the Titans' 2, with 9 shots attempted in the first period.
Michigan State will host its second home game of the season against Oakland on Sunday, Sept. 3 at 3:00 p.m.
