EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State women's soccer team remains undefeated after shutting out Ohio State, 2-0, on Sunday, Sept. 10 during its Big Ten opener at Old College Field. MSU is now 6-0-1 overall and off to the best start in school history, while the Buckeyes drop to 5-5 overall (0-1 Big Ten).
Michigan State freshman Andrea Sied (Livonia) started off the Spartan scoring attack in the first half with a goal at the 35:38 mark off of a penalty kick. During the second half, senior Kim Van Cleef (Detroit) added the Spartans' final goal at 70:28, off of an assist by sophomore Heidi Lutz (San Ramon, Calif.).
Michigan State senior goalkeeper Sara Kloosterman (Farmington) played an outstanding game, increasing her career shutouts to 12.5. Kloosterman has made 33 saves and given up only four goals so far this season.
When asked about the victory over the Buckeyes, MSU Head Coach Tom Saxton said, "It's huge. We have four tough games coming up and getting this one in the bank early really helps us in the Big Ten standings. We didn't play our best but we took advantage of the opportunities we had today."
The Spartans will return to action next weekend on the road against Iowa on Friday, Sept. 22 (4:00 p.m.), in Iowa City, and Sunday, Sept. 24 against Illinois in Champaign (2:00 p.m.).
