East Lansing, Mich - The Michigan State women's golf team hosted its annual Mary Fossum Spartan Invitational this weekend at Forest Akers Golf Course in East Lansing. After postponing the event due to flooded greens on Saturday, the golfers played one round of 18 holes Sunday morning. The University of Minnesota won the tournament, shooting a combined score of 296, while the Spartans finished fourth with a score of 302.
Spartan junior Stacy Snider (Grand Rapids, Mich.) closed the event at 74, tied at tenth place with Kelly Pickett of Eastern Michigan. Senior Kasey Gant (Grand Rapids, Mich.) finished in the top twenty as well, shooting a 75 for 12th place, followed by freshman Allison Fouch (Grand Rapids, Mich.), who finished in 19th place with a score of 76. Jenny Bruun of Minnesota won the individual tournament with a score of 70, breaking a tie with Kim Benedict of Michigan after a one-hole playoff.
"Eighteen holes really was not a true test," stated head coach Stacy Slobodnik. "But as the hosts of the tournament, we were very fortunate to play today at all. Altogether, we played a decent round."
The Spartan golfers are on the road for the rest of the season. They tee off in Minneapolis for the Lady Northern Invitational September 29th.
