SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - For Michigan State hockey fans, it was definitely worth the wait.
Rustyn Dolyny (Fort Frances, Ont.) scored the game-winning goal with 20 seconds left in overtime as the Spartans (18-1-4 overall, 11-1-3 Central Collegiate Hockey Association) notched an improbable 2-1 victory over host Lake Superior State Sunday afternoon. The victory in today's game, which was moved back one day because of an ice maintenance issue Saturday, extended the MSU unbeaten streak to 20 (17-0-3) dating back to Oct. 20
MSU sent the game in the extra session when Andrew Bogle (Calgary, Alta.) scored the Spartans' first goal - a power-play tally - with five seconds left in the third period. With goaltender Ryan Miller (East Lansing, Mich.) pulled for an extra attacker, the senior centerman picked up a loose rebound in front of the Laker net and batted it past sprawling Laker netminder Jayme Platt.
Dolyny's notched the winning tally when he and linemate Damon Whitten (Brighton, Mich.) broke into the LSSU zone two-on-one. Whitten sprung Dolyny with a pretty pass and the senior captain deked Platt for his seventh goal of the year.
"To get a goal with five seconds left and one in OT with 20 seconds left - that just doesn't happen," said Dolyny.
Lake Superior State took the 1-0 lead late in the second quarter, snapping Miller's scoreless streak at 182:04 in the process. The Lakers (10-16-0 overall, 6-13-0 CCHA) took advantage of a two-on-one advantage of their own when forward Kyle Anderson jumped off the bench and onto the ice as a penalty to teammate Matt Frick expired. Anderson fired a shot on goal, but the puck deflected off the stick of defenseman Brad Fast (Fort St. John, B.C.) and slid between Miller's legs.
"Lake Superior State played hard and did the things they needed to do to keep us off balance," said MSU head coach Ron Mason. "Sometimes better teams find ways to win and lesser teams find ways to lose."
