Men's Tennis Team Shuts Out Toledo & Wright State

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Spartans started their home season with two shut outs, defeating Toledo (7-0) and Wright State (7-0) on Saturday, January 20 at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility. The only loss of the day was a doubles match to Toledo. Adam Hourani & Mike Hodge (MSU) were defeated by Carlos Lomena & Hector Arroyo (UT) 8-6. The Spartans only dropped two sets in all twelve matches of singles play.
To shut out Toledo the team had to rely on two freshmen at the No. 1 doubles slot. It was a hard-fought match and with the doubles score tied at one a piece the pressure was on. Eric Simonton & Chris Mitchell (MSU) were tied with Dipesh Rao & Alex Farron-Mahon (UT) at 6-6 when State broke Toledo to take the lead at 7-6 and then continued to hold to defeat Toledo 8-6 and win the first point of the day. The Spartans did not lose a single set in singles action as No. 1 singles Goran Topalo posted a 6-3, 7-6 (3) over UT's Dipesh Rao.
Against Wright State the Spartans swept the doubles action to earn their first point of the meet. At No. 1 singles, Goran Topalo (MSU) defeated Chad Derry (WSU) in a super tiebreaker (6-7, 6-0 (14-12)). Also having to win in a super tiebreaker to seal the Spartans shut out victory was Rodrigo Abucham. He defeated Mike Brush at No. 6 singles, 6-3, 5-7 (10-2).
"We had some tough competition today and beat some people we needed to beat," said Head Coach Gene Orlando. "We were able to gain a little confidence because we have a big challenge ahead of us as we face No. 44 Tulane on Friday."
The Spartans return to action at the MSU Indoor Tennis Facility on Friday January 26, 2001 at 12 p.m, when they face No. 44 Tulane.
