East Lansing, Mich. - The Michigan State men's soccer team defeated Oakland University by a score of 4-1, Wednesday afternoon at Old College Field. MSU improves to 7-2-1 while Oakland falls to 4-3-2.
State got on the board in the 35th minute of the first half when Jeff Krass (So., Brighton) scored off a cross from Craig Hearn (So., Farmington Hills).
"I thought we were sluggish the first half hour of the game, it might have had something to do with coming off the Ohio State win, " explained MSU head coach Joe Baum. "Our subs came in and gave us some juice and we seemed to have a lot more energy after our first goal. In the second half, we were more up-tempo and enthusiastic."
The Spartans were more enthusiastic in the second half, as they came and scored two quick goals. Ryan McMahen (Fr., Munster, Ind.) scored in the 50th minute off a header and Brett Konley (Jr., Plymouth) scored just two minutes later to put MSU up 3-0. Anders Kelto (Sr., Traverse City) and Paul Vance (Sr., Flint) each assisted on the goals, respectively.
After Oakland broke MSU goalkeeper Mike Robinson's (So., Troy) bid for a second-straight shutout in the 72nd minute with a goal, Jordan Gruber (Fr., Beverly Hills) sealed the win at the 74:12 mark off a pass from Steve Arce (Sr., Windsor, Ont.).
The Spartans will host Michigan at Old College Field, Sunday, Oct. 14 at 2:30 p.m.
