Women's Crew Dominates At Head of Grand

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State women's rowing crew competed in their only home meet of the fall, the Head of the Grand, at the Grand River in Lansing today (Oct. 21). The Spartans faced in-state rivals Grand Valley State and Northern Michigan, taking first place in every event, including the women's novice eight, the women's pair, the women's varsity eight, and the women's varsity four. The regatta was the first crew event for the MSU novice boats.
Under fairly calm wind conditions, the second MSU novice boat won the novice eight race with a time of 12:22.00. The Spartans later dominated the women's pair competition, placing first, second, third, and fourth, with the first boat finishing at 12:26.00. The women's varsity eight took first and second, with MSU's second varsity boat winning the race at 10:56.00. The Spartans also took first, second, and third in the varsity four race, with the winning boat finishing at 11:34.00.
Head coach Bebe Bryans shared her thoughts on the team performance: "We accomplished exactly what we came out here to do today. We had consistently strong performances. Our novice, for their first race, looked like they had been rowing all their lives."
Novice coach Stacey Rippetoe remarked on the performance of the newest members of the crew, "I think they performed to their potential. We've been very focused in practice, and they did everything we taught them to do."
The Spartans' last race of the fall is the Head of the Elk on Oct. 28 in Elkhart, Ind.
