Swimming And Diving Teams Compete Against Eastern Michigan

YPSILANTI, Mich. - The Michigan State men's and women's swimming and diving teams competed against Eastern Michigan Friday night. The women defeated the Eagles, 148-93, while the men fell, 163.50-79.50. The women improve to 2-1 while the men stand at 0-1.
Jen Windstein (Fr., Lancaster, Pa.), Katie Duncombe (Jr., Erie, Pa.) and Ildiko Szekely (Sr., Budapest, Hungary) all took home two first-place finishes for the Spartans. Windstein placed first in the 1000 free (10:14.40) and 500 free (5:00.27), Duncombe took first in the 200 IM (2:06.82) and 200 backstroke (2:05.30) and Szekely placed first in the 200 fly (2:03.22) and 200 free (1:55.44).
Carly Weiden (Sr., Kentwood, Mich.) placed first in the 1-meter (273.75) and 3-meter (280.73) diving events for the second-consecutive meet.
"The women are looking better every week," said MSU head coach Jim Lutz. "They did a tremendous job tonight, and put in another solid performance."
In the men's season opener, three Spartans took home first-place finishes. Joe Brennan (Jr., Poway, Calif.) took the top spot in the 500 free with a time of 4:39.77. In the 200 free, Scott Shafer (Sr., Centerville, Va.) placed first with a time of 1:43.98. In his first collegiate meet, Justin Laskowski (Fr., Bay City, Mich.) was the top diver in the 1-meter event (250.35).
"We swam very well tonight on the men's side," said Lutz. "We were real competitive. We just ran into a good team, but I feel at this point we are ahead of where we were last year."
The men's team returns to action Friday, Nov. 2, to face Georgia at 6 p.m. in McCaffree Pool in the IM West Building. The women return to action Thursday, Nov. 8 at 6 p.m. to face Ball State in Muncie, Ind.
