Spartans Conclude Fall Rowing at Head of the Elk

ELKHART, Ind. - The Michigan State women's rowing team concluded its fall season with strong finishes at the Head of the Elk in Elkhart, Ind. Hosted by the Indiana Rowing Association, the women's team and the Michigan State men's rowing club took second place overall under windy conditions on a 2.5-mile course.
MSU's open fours finished strong, with the first varsity boat taking second with a time of 16:07.04, just 21 seconds behind Louisville (15:46.93). The second varsity four boat won their race with a time of 16:26.69. In the open single competition, junior Kate Gay (Cowra, NSW, Austrailia) finished second with a time of 18:55.85 behind Laura Brun of the Lansing Oar and Paddle Club (18:05.06).
In the last race of the day, Michigan State won the women's open eight race, beating Michigan with a time of 13:31.48. The Wolverines came in almost 20 seconds after the Spartans at 13:57.33.
The MSU novice also had a successful morning in their first away regatta. The first novice boat took third place overall with a time of 16:17.95.
Assistant coach Matt Weise remarked, "I think we did very well today. It was pretty windy out there, but we handled it pretty well. It's a good indication of the team's abilities, and hopefully we can build on that during the winter."
