EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State baseball team will open the 2002 season February 22 in Las Vegas, Nev. where they will take on U.C. Santa Barbara. The Spartans will also play UNLV and Creighton in Las Vegas. MSU will play its first 17 games of the season on the road.
The Spartans, along with the rest of the Big Ten Conference teams, will play 32 conference games this year as opposed to 28 in years past. 18 of MSU's conference games will be at home, including a four-game set with Ohio State (May 10-12) at Oldsmobile Park in Lansing, Mich. The only conference team to not appear on the Spartans' conference schedule is Purdue.
"Our schedule is very competitive," MSU head coach Ted Mahan said. "Our first 17 games are on the road so it is a challenging schedule especially since 11 of those games are against competition from the west and south."
"We still feel with our experience we will have success early in the year despite those obstacles we need overcome."
The Spartans home opener is March 26 vs. Siena Heights.
