EAST LANSING, Mich. - Michigan State baseball coach Ted Mahan announced the signings of five recruits Friday (Nov. 30). All five players will come to MSU in the fall of 2002. Coach Mahan was pleased with his latest recruiting class.
"The five early signees are all good students along with being outstanding baseball players," said Mahan. "We are excited about them attending MSU. These five provide a great start for what could be one of our best recruiting classes ever. All of our early needs were met by signing four pitchers and one outfielder."
The new baseball signees are:
John Dwan-LHP-Libertyville, Ill.,-Overall record of 17-2 during sophomore and junior years of high school...128 innings pitched with 157 strikeouts and a combined ERA of 1.63...also had a .405 batting average his junior year...two time All-North Suburban Conference selection...participated in the Area Code Showcase in Illinois and the National Team One Showcase in Tempe, Ariz.,...also played soccer at Libertyville and was all-conference for three years.
Mahan on Dwan: "One of the top pitchers in the state of Illinois. He throws strikes and is very competitive. He will have a great opportunity to work his way into our starting rotation as a freshman."
Jeremy Dow-RHP-Lakewood-Two year letterwinner...2002 will be his third year on varsity...posted a 6-4 record as a junior with 95 strikeouts...two-time All Barry-Ionia County and All District selection.
Mahan on Dow: "Jeremy has a very high ceiling as a pitcher as a pitcher who through hard work can become a great college pitcher. He is very competitive with a good fastball and breaking ball. We feel he can contribute as a freshman and look forward to working with him."
Chris Shea-LHP/OF-Birmingham-Will be a valuable two-way player at MSU as a pitcher and an outfielder...attend University of Detroit High School as a freshman...was 15-6 as a pitcher in the spring and summer of 2001...also batted .350 for Brother Rice H.S. and the Rochester Yankees summer team.
Mahan on Shea: "Chris will be very valuable to MSU baseball because he is a two-way player. He is very aggressive offensively, can steal bases and is also a good hitter. On the mound he provides us with another left-handed pitcher, which are difficult to find."
Chris Toepper-RHP-Portage-3.86 GPA...member of National Honor Society...two-year letterwinner in soccer...member of 2000 state championship high school soccer team...All-Big B first team pitcher as a junior...All District as a junior...7-3 record with a 1.51 ERA with 71 strikeouts.
Mahan on Toepper: "Chris is one of the best pitchers in the state of Michigan and he helps to make this class of pitchers one of the best we have ever recruited. We feel he can contribute right away, eventually becoming an outstanding collegiate pitcher."
Alan Cattrysse-INF-Chatham, ONT-Member of the 2001 Canadian National Junior Team...batted .339 for the junior team...batted .500 and hit five home runs for the Tecumseh Thunder summer team...can play a number of positions.
Mahan on Cattrysse: "Alan is one of the top high school players in Canada. He is very talented as evidence by his selection to the Canadian Junior Olympic Team. Alan has the opportunity to play a lot as a freshman due to our losing many senior infielders. He is also an outstanding student, making him a true student athlete."
