Baseball Drops Season Opener, 5-4

TROY, ALA. - The Michigan State baseball team (0-1) dropped its first game of the year to Troy State (8-4) by a score of 5-4 on Friday, Feb. 23 in Troy, Ala.
Troy State got on the scoreboard first with two runs in the first inning. The Spartans scored one run in the fourth inning as Kyle Geswein (Jr., Dayton, Ohio) hit is first home run of the year. Troy State's Collin Holder answered in the bottom of the fourth with a home run of his own to make the score 3-1. The Trojans added another run in the bottom of the sixth inning to make the score 4-1.
Michigan State's comeback began in the top of the seventh inning when junior Chris McCuiston (Birmingham) drove in juniors Troy Bergman (Grosse Pointe) and Don Watchowski (Shelby Twp.) on a single to center field. Two batters later, sophomore Bob Malek (Detroit) drove in McCuiston to tie the game at four.
In the bottom of the ninth, the Trojans' Coby Smith scored from third base on an error to win the game for Troy State, 5-4.
The Spartans will face the Trojans again Saturday (Feb. 24)at 2 p.m. and at 1 p.m. Sunday (Feb. 25). All times are EST.
