Troy, Ala. - The Michigan State (0-2) baseball team lost to Troy State (9-4) by a score of 5-4 on Saturday, February 24.
Again, as it did Friday, Troy State got out to a fast start, scoring three runs in the first inning. The Spartans then answered in the top of the second when junior Kyle Geswein (Dayton, Ohio) doubled and scored one batter later. The Trojans also put up one run in the second inning to make the score 4-1.
In the top of the fourth, Geswein stepped up again, knocking in sophomore Brett Wattles (Rochester), cutting the lead to 4-2. However, the Trojans would answer, scoring one run in the bottom of the inning to make the lead 5-2.
The Spartans put up one run in the sixth when Geswein singled to right field, scoring Wattles again, making the score 5-3. Junior Don Watchowski (Shelby Twp.) then homered for the Spartans in the seventh inning, making it 5-4. MSU's ninth inning rally fell short as the Spartans left two men on base.
Kyle Geswein started the game for the Spartans and gave up four runs on two hits in two innings. Junior Jon Huizinga (Wayland) replaced Geswein in the third inning and gave up one run on six hits in six innings of work. For Troy State, Jason Bernard pitched a complete game, giving up nine hits and four runs, improving his record to 4-0.
The Spartans will face the Trojans again tomorrow in the series closer at 1 p.m. EST.
