MSU Men's Tennis Team Shuts Out Valparaiso

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - The Michigan State men's tennis team shut out Valparaiso, 7-0, on Sunday, Feb. 25 in Kalamazoo. This marks the fourth shutout by Michigan State this season.
Freshman Eric Simonton (Annandale, N.J.) brought his record at the No. 1 singles position to 2-0, defeating Nate Buckert, 6-4, 6-2. Freshman Chris Mitchell (Ann Arbor, Mich.) raised his No. 2 singles record to 2-0 defeating Nick Vuko, 6-3, 6-3. Other freshmen earning wins were Mike Jonckheere (London, Ont.) at the No. 5 slot and Josh Efros (West Bloomfield, Mich.) at No. 6. Efros also teamed with Mike Hodge (Grand Rapids, Mich.), at No. 3 doubles, defeating Jeff Vrabel and Jonathan Huffman, 8-4.
Sophomores Adam Hourani (Lansing, Mich.) and Rodrigo Abucham (Sao Paulo, Brazil) also scored wins for MSU. Hourani defeated Chris Hill 2-6, 6-1, 7-5 at the No. 3 position, while Abucham defeated Vrabel, 6-3, 6-3. The sophomore duo was also victorious at the No. 2 doubles position defeating Hill and Mirza Mahic 8-5.
The Spartans (6-5, 0-2 Big Ten) head to Florida for their spring break trip where they will face Jacksonville University on Tuesday, March 6 and South Florida on Wednesday, March 7.
