Baseball Wins Fifth Straight Game

BOCA RATON, Fla. - The Spartan baseball team won its fifth straight game by a score of 4-2 over Iona on Saturday (March 10). The game was called after the sixth inning due to rain. It was the Spartans first of two games on Saturday, as they faced LaSalle in the afternoon.
Michigan State scored the first run of the game in the second inning as freshman David Miller (Whitehall) doubled to start the inning and advanced to third on a passed ball. Miller scored one batter later as junior Don Watchowski (Clinton Twp.) drove him in. They added one more run in the third inning, as sophomore Bob Malek (Canton) hit a leadoff double. Malek scored two batters later as junior Kyle Geswein (Dayton, Ohio) knocked a single to right field to take the lead, 2-0.
The Spartans got two more runs in the fourth inning to go up 4-0. As they did in the last two innings, State lead off the inning with a double, this time junior Troy Bergman (Grosse Pointe) hit a double to right-center field. After a walk by sophomore Brett Wattles (Rochester), Bergman scored two batters later as Malek drove Wattles in on of a single to center field. One play later, the Spartans scored a run on a double-steal, as Wattles stole home while Malek stole second.
Iona scored two runs in the bottom of the fourth to cut the Spartans lead in half, 4-2.
Geswein started the game for MSU, going all six innings and giving up five hits while striking out four.
The Spartans (5-5 overall) will take on LaSalle Saturday afternoon (March 10) to complete their spring trip.
