Ohio Snaps MSU Baseball's Six-Game Winning Streak

ATHENS, Ohio. - The Michigan State baseball team fell to Ohio University, 7-3, Friday. The loss snapped the Spartans' six-game winning streak and also brought to an end the 11-game hitting streak of Bob Malek (So., Canton).
The Spartans opened the scoring in the second inning. Rick Court (Sr., Grosse Pointe) led off the inning with a walk and then scored two batters later when David Miller (Fr., Whitehall) hit a sacrifice fly to right center to put the Spartans up 1-0. Ohio responded in the bottom of the second, taking a 4-1 lead on four hits and three walks.
Neither team scored until the top of the sixth inning when Kyle Geswein (Jr., Dayton, Ohio) hit a two-run homer to right center, scoring Court, amd bringing the Spartans within 4-3.
Ohio added two runs in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI single by Wally Sarnowski and RBI double by Tony Gandee, making the score 6-3. The Bobcats added another run in the seventh to provide the final margin of victory.
Michigan State starting pitcher Dylan Putnam (Jr., Ann Arbor) took the loss, pitching six complete innings, giving up six runs on eight hits while striking out eight batters. Scott Brandell (Sr., DeWitt) pitched the final two innings and gave up just one hit while striking out four. The Bobcats' Denny McGee pitched a complete game, giving up seven hits and striking out 11.
The two teams meet again tomorrow in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. EST. Geswein (1-1) and Nick Bates (1-1) (Jr., Blissfield) will be the starting pitchers for MSU.
