Men's Track Opens Outdoor Season At Alabama Relays

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The Michigan State men's track and field team opened the 2001 outdoor season at the Alabama Relays on Saturday (March 24). No team scores are being kept in this 40-team season-opening meet.
Andy Lixey (So., East Tawas, Mich.) was MSU's top finisher as he placed third in the finals of the 800-meter run. Lixey ran a 1:49.48, good for fourth place on the Spartans' all-time top five outdoor performances. Matt Ingram (Sr., Lyons, Mich.) finished 16th in 1:53.47 in the 800 meters while Jake Dalton (So., East Lansing, Mich.) placed 36th (1:55.82).
Senior Jasmin Alverson (Inkster, Mich.) took home two top-25 finishes. Alverson placed ninth in the 110-meter hurdles (14.43) and 25th in the 400-meter hurdles (54.66).
Junior Jeff Kus (Grand Ledge, Mich.) placed 10th in the pole vault (13-11.25) and 23rd in the long jump (22-05.75). Ben Logan (Jr., Harrisburg, Ore.) took home seventh in the pole vault (14-05.25). In other field event action, sophomore Steve Manz (West Branch, Mich.) posted a 12th-place showing in the hammer throw (161-06), while Paul Terek (Sr., Livonia, Mich.) was fifth in the javelin throw.
In the 1,500 meter run, Steve Sherer (Fr., Saline, Mich.) placed 13th in 3:55.32 while Jeff Mulder (Fr., Haslett, Mich.) recorded a 14th-place showing at 3:55.34.
Freshman Steve Padgett (Cincinnati, Ohio) was MSU's top finisher in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, recording a 9:52.33 good for 11th place. Mike Thorson finished 13th (9:54.33) and Brian Wilson, 14th (9:56.53) in the steeplechase.
MSU continues action at the Alabama Relays on Sunday (March 25) at noon with the discus throw.
