TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - No. 19 Florida State (9-5) completed a three-game sweep of Michigan State (0-5) Sunday, winning 9-5. It marked the sixth-straight win for the Seminoles, who got two home runs from designated hitter Chris Cole.
Florida State jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first thanks to Ryan Barthelemy's two-run double and Chris Hart's RBI single.
Spartan starter Scott Brandell (0-1) lasted only 1.1 innings as Barthelemy hit a three-run homer in the second to give the Seminoles a 6-0 advantage.
Michigan State got back into the game with a four-run third inning. Centerfielder Bob Malek delivered a two-run double, shortstop Jared Koutnik scored on a wild pitch and designated hitter Kyle Geswein added an RBI single to right.
Cole led off the Seminole fourth with a solo homer to put FSU on top 7-4. The Spartans pulled to within 7-5 on Geswein's RBI single in the fifth but Cole's two-run homer in the sixth extended the Seminoles' lead to 9-5.
FSU starter Robby Read (3-2) worked six innings, giving up five runs (four earned) on nine hits while striking out seven. MSU's Nick Bates pitched 4.2 innings in relief and recorded a career-high six strikeouts.
The Spartans' lead-off hitter Brett Wattles had four hits in five at-bats and scored twice.
Michigan State continues its nine-game road trip Tuesday, March 6 (2:30 p.m.) at Lynn University in Boca Raton, Fla.
