East Lansing, Mich. - The Michigan State baseball team (15-15, 3-7) defeated Western Michigan (11-14) by a score of 9-4 on Tuesday (April 10) at Kobs Field. The win brought the Spartans record back to .500 for the season.
After a scoreless two innings, the Spartans jumped out front with six runs in the bottom of the third inning. MSU made it 1-0 on a balk as Brett Wattles (So., Rochester) scored, who reached on a single. Don Watchowski (Jr., Shelby Twp.) then drove in Bob Malek (So., Canton) to double the lead. Chris McCuiston (Jr., Birmingham) followed with his second grand slam of the season to left field to boost State's lead to 6-0.
The Spartans built on their lead in the fourth frame, making it a 9-0 lead courtesy of James Moreno (Fr., Holt) who hit a triple to left field, scoring Wattles, Malek and Matt Haynes (Jr., Midland).
The Broncos broke the shut out in the sixth inning, as Sam Flamont hit a two-run homer, making the score, 9-2. They added two more runs on another two-run shot in the seventh to bring the score to 9-4. The Spartans clamped down defensively in the final two innings to make the final score, 9-4.
Nick Bates (Jr., Blissfield) pitched seven strong innings for the Green and White to pick up his third win of the season, going seven innings, and surrendering four runs off seven hits, while striking out three. Mike Salling (Jr., Mesick) saw his first action of the season in the eighth inning and retired three-of-four batters he faced. Domanick Squires (Jr., Rochester Hills) pitched the ninth inning and allowed no hits. Bryan Haveman suffered the loss for the Broncos.
The Spartans travel to Grand Rapids tomorrow (April 11) to take on Grand Valley State at 6:35 p.m. at Old Kent Park.
