TOP STORY: MSU is now 16-15 overall this season and 3-7 in the Big Ten and host Ohio State this weekend, which stands in second place in the Big Ten Conference standings. The Spartans fell in three-of-four games last weekend at Minnesota. However, earlier this week they defeated Western Michigan, 9-4, (April 10) and Grand Valley State, 6-4 (April 11).
Note of the Weekend
AMONG THE NATION'S ELITE: Sophomore Bob Malek is currently leading both Michigan State and the Big Ten Conference in batting average with an astounding .461. Malek has led the conference all season in the batting average category and now stands tied for 10th place nationally in NCAA Division I batting. Malek also leads the Big Ten in hits with 53, which is good for 18th place nationally among Division I schools.
CLOSING UP SHOP: Junior closer Domanick Squires has a team-high five saves this season and has an ERA of 1.76 in 13 appearances. His five saves moves him into eighth-place in singles season saves by an MSU pitcher. The single-season saves record is 11, set by Mike Ericson in 1990. Freshman Bryan Gale also has worked out of the bullpen this year and is 5-0 with two saves in 12 appearances and posts a 2.08 ERA.
LOAD `EM UP: State is hitting .471 this season as a team when the bases are loaded. This includes four players (Charlie Braun, Rick Court, Don Watchowski and Brett Wattles) that are hitting 1.000 with the bases jammed. MSU is also hitting .350 with runners in scoring position.
