East Lansing, Mich. - The Michigan State baseball team (17-18, 4-10) fell to Ohio State (27-8, 9-3) on Sunday (April 15) by a score of 13-3 at Kobs Field. The win gave the Buckeyes a 3-1 series win.
The Buckeyes grabbed an early 2-0 lead on a two-run homer by Doug Dendinger in the first inning. MSU responded in the bottom of the inning, cutting the lead in half when Bob Malek (So., Canton) grounded out but scored Chris McCuiston (Jr., Birmingham). Mike Check drove in Mike Harris in the second to reestablish a two-run OSU lead.
In the third the Spartans added a run when Brady Burrill (So., Newhall, Calif.) grounded out to third to drive in Brett Wattles (So., Rochester). For Burrill, it was his ninth RBI of the series. OSU's Christian Snavely continued the back and forth affair in the fourth frame when he hit a solo homer to make the score 4-2. A two-RBI double by Doug Dendinger extended the Buckeye lead to 6-2 later in the fourth.
The Spartans used three different pitchers in the fourth, as starter Nick Bates (Jr., Blissfield) was replaced by Bryan Gale (Fr., Decatur) and Ryan Kurtz (Fr., Toledo, Ohio). Bates went three and two-thirds innings, allowing six hits, five runs (all earned) while striking out four and suffered his third loss of the season.
Two costly errors by the Spartans and two timely hits by the Buckeyes in the fifth extended the OSU lead to 10-2. MSU righthander Dylan Putnam (Jr., Ann Arbor) came into the game for Kurtz to finish the fifth inning.
OSU's Snavely hit his third homer of the series in the sixth, while the Buckeyes added two more in the seventh to make the score 13-2. Domanick Squires (Jr., Rochester) was the fifth pitcher to enter the game for the Spartans and finished the game, allowing four hits, two runs (one earned) and fanned three. MSU added one final run in the ninth inning as Don Watchowski (Jr., Shelby Twp.) singled and later scored to make the final, 13-3.
The Spartans will next be in action Tuesday (April 17) at Kobs Field to take on Siena Heights at 3 p.m.
