East Lansing, Mich. - The Michigan State baseball team (20-20, 6-12) defeated Northwestern Sunday (April 22), 6-2, at Kobs Field. The win gave the Spartans a series split with the Wildcats. The game was halted after the completion of the fourth inning for a one hour, 55 minute-rain delay.
Bryan Gale (Fr., Decatur) pitched a complete game for the Spartans and struck out a career-high eight hitters to improve to 7-0 on the season. He scattered seven hits and allowed just one earned run. Ryan Bos suffered the loss for Northwestern.
A fielding error in the second inning by MSU allowed the Wildcats to stake an early 1-0 lead. After the Spartans put two on in the third, Chris McCuiston (Jr., Birmingham) drove in one run on a double to left field to tie the game at one.
When action resumed after the rain delay, Northwestern's Jason Krynski broke the tie with a solo homer to leftfield in the top of the sixth frame. MSU tied the game at two in their half of the sixth when Bob Malek (So., Canton) scored from third base. Malek then scored again in the top half of the eighth to give the Spartans the lead, 3-2, when Scott Koerber (Fr., Grosse Pointe) singled to leftfield. MSU added two more runs in the inning when Troy Bergman (Jr., Grosse Pointe) doubled to left-center. Charlie Braun (So., Grosse Pointe) drove in Kevin Crews (Jr., Hinckley, Ohio), who went 3-for-4 in the game, to give MSU what proved to be the final run and a 6-2 victory.
The Spartans will return to action Tuesday (April 24) at Central Michigan at 3 p.m. MSU will host CMU Wednesday and Grand Valley State Thursday at Oldsmobile Park, both games begin at 7 p.m.
