Baseball Loses To Central Michigan, 15-6

East Lansing, Mich. - The Spartan baseball team (20-22, 6-12) fell to Central Michigan, as the Chippewas beat the Spartans, 15-6, in the second game of the home-and-home series at Lansing's Oldsmobile Park. CMU (27-15) put up a combined nine runs in the fourth and fifth innings to pull away from State. MSU gave up 19 hits and committed five errors in the loss.
Central Michigan jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first off a sacrifice bunt followed by a solo homer by Mike Gates. The Spartans jumped out to a two-run lead in the second, scoring four runs. Five of the first six batters reached safely which spelled the end of CMU starting pitcher Nick Latra's day. James Moreno (Fr., Holt), Kevin Crews (Jr., Hinckey, Ohio) and Scott Koerber (Fr., Grosse Pointe) reached base and Moreno scored when Charlie Braun (So., Grosse Pointe) walked. Chris McCuiston (Jr., Birmingham) then hit a three-RBI double to leftfield to give MSU a 4-2 lead.
The Chippewas struck back in the fourth frame, scoring three runs and taking a 5-4 lead, highlighted by a two-RBI single by Bryan Scheurer. They broke open the game in the fifth, sending 10 batters to the plate, with six runs off five hits to make the score 11-4.
CMU added four more runs over the final four innings. State added a run in the eighth when Rick Court (Sr., Grosse Pointe) scored and David Miller (Fr., Whitehall) scored on a sac fly by Matt Haynes (Jr., Midland) to make the final score 15-6.
Starting pitcher Kyle Geswein (Jr., Dayton, Ohio) pitched 4.1 innings, allowed eight hits and yielded seven runs, six earned, and struck out four to take the loss to drop to 2-5. CMU's Jeff Garner picked up the win, improving to 4-3. The two teams used a combined 11 pitchers in the game.
The Spartans will return to action tomorrow at Olds Park against Grand Valley State, game time is 7 p.m. RHP Jon Huizinga (Jr., Wayland) (3-2) is scheduled to throw for the Spartans.
