MSU Men's Tennis Season Comes To An End

MADISON, Wisc. - The 10th seeded Michigan State men's tennis team was defeated by host Wisconsin, 4-1, in the first round of the 2001 Big Ten Men's Tennis Championships on Thursday, April 26 at the Nielsen Tennis Facility.
The Badgers took an early lead by taking both the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles matches, winning the doubles point in the process. Wisconsin's Stefan Reist defeated sophomore Adam Hourani (Lansing, Mich.) at No. 2 singles (6-2, 6-2) to give the Badgers another point. UW's Dustin Taylor earned his team its third point, defeating sophomore Jimmy McGuire (Columbus, Ohio) at No. 4 singles (6-2, 6-2).
The Spartans earned its lone point when freshman Mike Jonckheere (London, Ont.) defeated UW's Scott Rutherford in straight sets (6-2, 6-4), at No. 5 singles. The Badgers finished off the Spartans when Danny Westerman beat freshman Eric Simonton (Annandale, N.J.) at No. 1 singles, 6-4, 6-1.
The Spartans close out the year with a 7-18 overall record and 1-10 Big Ten mark while the Badgers improve to 13-9 and 6-5 in the Big Ten. Wisconsin moves on to face No. 2 seed Ohio State tomorrow (April 27) at 2 p.m.
