In the fourth, Troy Bergman (Jr., Grosse Pointe) scored Scott Koerber (Fr., Grosse Pointe) on a sacrifice fly to centerfield to give MSU a 2-0 lead. Chris McCuiston (Jr., Birmingham) knocked State's second double of the inning to score Matt Haynes (Jr., Midland) to make the lead 3-0.
Three more runs in the fifth by the Green and White made the score 6-0 off RBI singles by Koerber, Bergman and Haynes. The Lakers got on the board in the sixth with two runs off two hits. The Spartans also added two more runs in the sixth off two hits and the help of two GVSU errors. Rick Court (Sr., Grosse Pointe) scored Bob Malek (So., Canton) on a sacrifice fly while David Miller (So., Whitehall) scored on an error.
A solo homer in the eighth inning by GVSU's Dustin Vugteveen, proved to be the game's final run, making the score, 8-3.
