Baseball Captures Win Over IPFW, 9-3

East Lansing, Mich. - The Michigan State baseball team (22-22, 6-12) defeated Indiana University Purdue University-Fort Wayne by a score of 9-3 on Friday at Kobs Field. The Spartans broke the game open in the fifth inning by scoring four runs. Dylan Putnam (Jr., Ann Arbor) struckout nine batters for the second time this season to earn the win for MSU.
An RBI-double by IPFW's Mark Simanski in the fourth inning gave the Mastodons an early 1-0 lead. MSU tied the game in its half of the fourth when Bob Malek (So., Canton) scored off a two-out single by Brady Burrill (So., Newhall, Calif.).
MSU added four more runs in the fifth off four hits to make the score, 5-1. Troy Bergman (Jr., Grosse Pointe) scored Scott Koerber (Fr., Grosse Pointe) to start the scoring followed by an RBI single by Malek that scored Chris McCuiston (Jr., Birmingham). Burrill and James Moreno (Fr., Holt) each drove in runs on a fielder's choice and single, respectively to end the scoring in the fifth.
IPFW fought back in the seventh with two runs off two hits highlighted by an RBI single by Joel Lesher. Again, MSU answered in the seventh with one run to make the lead, 6-3, as a single by Moreno scored Kevin Crews (Jr., Hinckley, Ohio). In the eighth, Crews drove in two runs on a single to highlight the eighth inning for MSU, as the Spartans scored three more runs off three hits to take a 9-3 lead.
Starter Dylan Putnam threw seven complete innings and tied a career-high with nine strikeouts in his first start since April 9 to earn the win. He surrendered five hits and allowed five runs. Brian Bogs suffered the loss for IPFW.
The Spartans begin a two game series on Saturday with Indiana Tech at Kobs Field, game time for Saturday and Sunday is 1 p.m.
