The Michigan State women's crew raced at the Big Ten Women's Rowing Championship on Saturday, April 28. The University of Michigan, which hosted the event on Belleville Lake, won the Championship with 56 points. The Wolverines were followed by Ohio State with 43 points, Michigan State and Wisconsin with 36 points, Iowa with 32 points, Minnesota with 18 points and Indiana with 16 points. The Spartans won the tiebreaker for third place due to a higher finish in the Varsity Eight.
MSU's Varsity Eight took third place in the Grande Final with a time of 6:24.58. Three MSU Varsity Eight rowers were rewarded for their performances. Junior Krista Buzzell (Fenton, Mich.) was named First Team All-Big Ten, while senior Angela Lound (Holland, Mich.) and Sophomore Rachel Miller (Meeteetse, Wyo.) were Second Team All-Big Ten selections.
In the Second Varsity Eight, MSU was less than a second away from qualifying for the Grande Final. The Spartans finished third in their heat with a time of 6:34.53, while Wisconsin claimed the second qualifying spot after rowing to the finish in 6:34.28. In the Petite Final, MSU took first with a time of 6:40.50.
In the Varsity Four, MSU finished fourth in the Grande Final of the First (7:27.09) and Second Varsity Four (7:48.55) races.
MSU took third place in the Grande Final of the First Novice Eight (6:51.47) and second in the Grande Final of the Second Novice Eight (6:59.71.)
The Spartans' next competition will be May 12-13 at the Central Championships in Oak Ridge, Tenn.
