Men's Gymnastics Qualifies for NCAA Championships

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The sixth-ranked MSU men's gymnastics team finished third, in the second session, at the 2001 NCAA Qualifying round, hosted by Ohio State, on Thursday, April 5, 2001. All the individuals, that competed for the team today, qualified for the individual championships which will be held on Saturday, April 7.
As a team the Spartans set team highs in two events, the floor exercise (36.000) and the high bar (35.300). The team placed second on both the floor exercise (36.000) and the parallel bars (34.600).
The Spartans had five gymnast finish in the top five. Junior Jonathan Plante (Easton, Pa.) placed second on the pommel horse with a score of 9.600. Sophomore Aaron Sheck (Oldtown, Ida.) placed fourth on the high bar with a 8.950, while junior Marc Chiappetta (Mundelein, Ill.) tied for fourth on the rings (9.300). Senior Tommy Housely (Jonesboro, Ga.) finished fifth on the floor exercise (9.150)and sophomore Brad Golden (Orlando, Fla.) tied for fifth on the high bar (8.900).
In the first session Penn State, one of seven teams from the Big Ten, qualified for the Championship round with a score of 213.625, taking third place. Illinois placed fourth, one place shy of qualification, with a score of 212.050. Qulifying in session two were Ohio State (217.075), Michigan (216.850) and MSU (213.350). Minnesota joined the Illini in just missing the cut by taking fourth with a score of 213.175 and Iowa finished out the Big Ten taking fifth with a score of 209.175.
The team and individual all-around finals will take place tomorrow (April 6) beginning at 7:00 p.m. at St. John Arena in Columbus, Ohio.
