Men's Gymnastics Fall Short Of NCAA Championship

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The MSU men's gymnastics team finished sixth in the team competition at the 2001 NCAA National Championships on Friday night (April 6). The NCAA Championships are being hosted by Ohio State University and will conclude today (April 7) with the individual championships to begin at 7 p.m..
Ohio State became the 2001 National Champion with a score of 218.125, defeating Oklahoma (217.775), California (216.775), Michigan (216.175), Penn State (212.125) and MSU (211.875). The Spartans set a team season high on the vault with a 36.125 and had two gymnasts finish in the top eight to continue on to the individual finals. Sophomore Brad Golden (Orlando, Fla.) tied for third on the floor exercise (9.300) and the vault (9.325) to qualify for the individuals. Junior Jonathan Plante (Easton, Pa.) tied with Clay Strother of Minnesota for first on the pommel horse with a 9.600.
