BLOOMINGTON, Ind.- - The Michigan State Women's golf team opened the Indiana Invitational with a successful lead at the Indiana University Golf Course in Bloomington. After 36 holes, the Spartans posted a team total of 314-313=627. Ohio State and Indiana are currently tied for second at 628, just one stroke behind MSU.
Junior Emily Bastel (Upper Sandusky, Ohio) came out strong in the first round of 18 holes with a score of 74, two strokes ahead of Mollie Fankhauser of Ohio State and Jan Dowling of Kent State (76). Bastel continued to post low scores with her second round score of 73 for a total of 147. Stacy Snider (Grand Rapids, Mich.) follows in seventh place, shooting 77-78=155. Sophomore Ann Marie Kersten (Oak Harbor, Ohio) came in third on the Spartan roster, firing 80-83=163 to tie for 32nd place, and true freshman Sarah Martin (Grosse Ile, Mich.) tied for 44th place with a score of 87-79=166. Senior Kasey Gant (Fort Wayne, Ind.) shot 83-86=169 placing 57th.
Martina Gillen of Kent State currently holds second place with 77-73=150. Missouri's Amelia Moses shot 78-74=152 for third.
The Spartans look to keep their lead tomorrow with an 8:30 tee time.
