Women's Crew To Compete At Central Region Championships

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State women's crew will compete at the Central Region Championships at Melton Hill Lake in Oak Ridge, Tenn., this Saturday and Sunday (May 12-13). With a strong showing this weekend, the Spartans can possibly earn a team berth to the NCAA Championships for the third-straight season.
The Spartans' varsity eight crew enters the competition ranked 12th in the May 9 USRowing/Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association NCAA Division I Varsity Eight Coaches Poll. Of the 18 schools competing at the regional championships, six are ranked in the most recent poll. In addition to MSU, No. 2 Michigan, No. 8 Ohio State, No. 13 Iowa, No. 16 Notre Dame and No. 17 Clemson will compete at Melton Lake. Other participating schools include Duke, Cincinnati, Indiana, Kansas, Kansas State, Minnesota, Murray State, North Carolina, SMU, Tennessee, Texas and Tulsa.
As a team, Michigan State placed second in the 2000 Central Region Championships and went on to place eighth at the NCAA Championships.
On Monday, May 14, bids to the NCAA Championships will be announced. Ten teams, all selected at large by the seven member Women's Rowing Committee. In addition, nine eight-woman boats from institutions not represented in the team competition will be selected.
