STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - The Spartan baseball team faltered at Penn State in its final game of the year, losing by a score of 10-1 Sunday (May 13). MSU committed four errors on the day as the Nittany Lions swept the four-game series. The loss dropped Michigan State's record to 29-26 and 9-16 in the Big Ten. MSU's 29 wins on the season are good for the ninth most victories by a Spartan team in a season.
PSU loaded the bases in the first with no outs but the Spartans were able to work out of the jam safely, allowing no runs.
Three batters reached safely for the Spartans in the third and Charlie Braun (So., Grosse Pointe) was forced in when James Moreno (Fr., Holt) was hit by a pitch. Penn State took the lead, 4-1, in the fourth frame, scoring three unearned runs, with the help of two Spartan errors and three walks.
PSU added three more runs in the sixth inning off two more MSU errors and then a RBI bunt single by Mike DeRenzo made the score 7-1. Penn State added another run in the seventh and two more in the eighth frame to make the final 10-1.
MSU starter Kyle Geswein (Jr., Dayton, Ohio) pitched five innings, allowing four runs, one earned, off five hits and fanned two while taking the loss (3-6). The Spartans used four more pitchers the rest of the way.
