Women's Crew Finishes Fifth At Central Region

OAK RIDGE, Tenn. - The Michigan State women's crew team finished fifth (14 points) in the Lexus Central Sprints on Melton Hill Lake in Oak Ridge, Tenn. Big Ten teams claimed the top five positions in the regatta, with Michigan winning the title with 130 points. Ohio State (74 points) and Iowa (49) placed second and third, respectively, while Minnesota (16) took fourth, just two points ahead of the Spartans.
Michigan State's first varsity eight scored eight points with its fourth-place finish (6:42.4). The Spartans crossed the finish line less than a second behind third-place Iowa (6:42.1).
The Spartans got three points from the second varsity eight as it captured fifth-place (6:55.6), again finishing the course less than a second behind fourth-place Clemson (6:55.1).
MSU's first varsity four took fifth (7:39.7), coming in an eyelash behind fourth-place Clemson (7:39.5). The Spartans' second varsity four finish fifth (7:58.8).
"Everybody did what they could today and everybody followed the race plan," MSU fourth-year head coach Bebe Bryans said. "We simply got beat by better boats.
"We were involved in a number of close races Saturday and I had hoped that we could maintain those positions in the finals but we weren't able to hold on.
"This Central Region features three of the top 10 teams in the country. Iowa had a great regatta, beating us by less than a second in the first varsity eight."
The field for the NCAA Women's Rowing Championships will be announced Tuesday, May 15. Lake Lanier in Gainesville, Ga., serves as site for the NCAAs May 24-26.
