Women's Crew Competes On Day One At NCAA Championship

GAINESVILLE, Ga. - The Michigan State women's crew first varsity eight competed Thursday (May 24) on day one of the 2001 NCAA Women's Rowing Championship on Lake Lanier in Gainesville, Ga.
In Thursday morning's varsity eight heat, Michigan State placed fifth with a time of 6:45.13. Brown, the number-one ranked crew in the nation, won the heat at 6:26.78. By not placing in the top two of their heat, the Spartans competed in the afternoon repechage races, where they would attempt to qualify for Friday's semifinals.
MSU won heat two of the repechage race to advance to Friday's (March 25) semifinals. MSU won the heat in a time of 6:56.2, 1.5 seconds faster than second-place Boston University (6:57.7) and three seconds faster than third-place Yale (6:59.2).
The first varsity eight semifinals will take place Friday with the first semifinal starting at 11 a.m. and the second semifinal at 11:20 a.m. The Spartans, who will race in lane 5 in the second semifinal, will attempt to qualify for Saturday's Grand Final.
MSU's first varsity eight is made up of coxswain Cassandra Weddel (Jr., East Tawas, Mich.), Krista Buzzell (Jr., Fenton, Mich.), Rachel Miller (So., Meeteetse, Wyo.), Amy Silder (So., Naperville, Ill.), Jennifer Czar (Sr., Rochester Hills, Mich.), Angela Lound (Sr., Holland, Mich.), Nicole DeMott (Sr., Rogers, Minn.), Nicole Pefley (Sr., Grand Rapids, Mich.) and Kate Gay (So., Cowra, New South Wales, Australia). Lori Kingstrom (Jr., Troy, Mich.) and Laura Thomas (So., Hastings, Mich.) traveled as spares.
