EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Michigan State women's crew first varsity eight placed fourth in the Petite Final on the final day of competition (Saturday, May 26) at the 2001 NCAA Women's Rowing Championship on Lake Lanier in Gainesville, Ga.
In the petite final, MSU placed fourth in a time of 6:50.52 to place 10th overall. Ohio State won the Petite Final in a time of 6:44.87 while California was second at 6:48.14. Washington won the varsity eight by taking first in the Grand Final at 7:04.03.
In just four years as a varsity sport at Michigan State, the first varsity eight has finished in the top 10 at the NCAA Championships all four years. In 2000, the Spartans placed a school-best eighth. In 1999, the Spartans placed 10th and ninth in 1998.
"I'm pleased with the effort the entire crew gave today," said MSU head coach Bebe Bryans. "Everyone can be happy with their performance. We moved up from our pre-championship seeding, which is quite an accomplishment. We got stronger as the week went on, but we just couldn't catch a few of the teams ahead of us. But I think we showed that we are a strong crew. To finish in the top 10 for the fourth-straight year is impressive."
MSU's first varsity eight is made up of coxswain Cassandra Weddel (Jr., East Tawas, Mich.), Krista Buzzell (Jr., Fenton, Mich.), Rachel Miller (So., Meeteetse, Wyo.), Amy Silder (So., Naperville, Ill.), Jennifer Czar (Sr., Rochester Hills, Mich.), Angela Lound (Sr., Holland, Mich.), Nicole DeMott (Sr., Rogers, Minn.), Nicole Pefley (Sr., Grand Rapids, Mich.) and Kate Gay (So., Cowra, New South Wales, Australia). Lori Kingstrom (Jr., Troy, Mich.) and Laura Thomas (So., Hastings, Mich.) traveled as spares.
