Baseball Knocks Off Michigan, 9-7

East Lansing, Mich. - A six-run first inning by the Michigan State baseball team propelled them to a 9-7 victory over Michigan Friday at Kobs Field. Brady Burrill (So., Newhall, Calif.) went 2-for-4 with three RBI in the win. The Spartans are now 25-22 overall and 7-12 in the Big Ten, while the Wolverines fall to 23-20 and 8-9 in the conference.
The Spartans dashed out to an early six run lead in the first inning, sending 11 batters to the plate. Chris McCuiston (Jr., Birmingham) started things for MSU when he reached on a single and then scored on an error by Michigan pitcher Bobby Korecky. After a RBI single by Burrill scored Brett Wattles (So., Rochester), Bob Malek (So., Canton) scored from third on a wild pitch to make the score 3-0. A single to right-centerfield by Jared Koutnik (Jr., Milwaukee, Wis.) scored Burrill and Kyle Geswein (Jr., Dayton, Ohio). A sacrifice fly by Kevin Crews (Jr., Hinckley, Ohio) scored Scott Koerber (Fr., Grosse Pointe) to close out the scoring in the first frame.
An RBI single in the second by Geswein made the score 7-0. Michigan followed in the third, scoring one run off a double by Mike Sokol. The Wolverines put up four more runs in the fifth off four hits to cut MSU's lead to 7-5.
Brady Burrill knocked a two out, two-RBI double in the sixth to score Wattles and Malek to give MSU a 9-5 lead. The Wolverines threatened again in the seventh and scored two runs, again cutting MSU's lead to two runs, 9-7.
Starter Jon Huizinga (Jr., Wayland) pitched five complete innings, allowing 10 hits and five runs on his way to his fifth win of the year. Dylan Putnam (Jr., Ann Arbor) entered the game in the sixth and pitched two innings and struck out three. Domanick Squires (Jr., Rochester Hills) earned his eighth save of the season, pitching the final two innings and yielding just one hit. U-M starter Bobby Korecky threw a complete game and took the loss.
The Spartans will take on the Wolverines tomorrow in a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. in Ann Arbor.
