Baseball Downs Oakland In Home Finale, 6-4

East Lansing, Mich. - The Michigan State baseball team (28-23, 9-13) defeated Oakland University (9-40) by a score of 6-4 at Kobs Field Tuesday. It was the Spartans' final home game of the season for MSU. MSU's Bob Malek (So., Canton) went 1-for-2 to give him a total of 83 hits on the season, leaving him one shy of tying the MSU single-season record.
Oakland took a 1-0 lead in the third inning when Ryan Freiburger scored on a Josh Masden ground out. The Spartans tied the game in the third when Malek hit a sacrifice fly to deep centerfield to score Charlie Braun (So., Grosse Pointe).
MSU took the lead in the fifth when Jared Koutnik (Jr., Milwaukee, Wis.) scored Chris McCuiston (Jr., Birmingham) on a double down the leftfield-line. Oakland tied the game at two in the sixth off an RBI single by Rob Brockman. Home runs by the Spartans' Kyle Geswein (Jr., Dayton, Ohio) and Brett Wattles (So., Rochester) in the sixth gave MSU a 5-2 lead. For Geswein, it was his seventh of the season. Wattles' two-run shot was his fourth.
Oakland scored two runs in the ninth to make the final score 6-4. MSU's Scott Koerber (Fr., Harper Woods) finished the game 4-for-4 with one run and one RBI.
Michigan State starting pitcher Jon Huizinga (Jr., Wayland) went three innings and gave up two hits and struck out three. Scott Brandell (Sr., DeWitt) entered the game in the fourth inning and pitched 4.1 innings, scattering five hits and punching out two, to earn his third win of the season in his final home appearance. Jason Roberts took the loss for the Grizzlies.
MSU will travel to Western Michigan tomorrow to take on the Broncos at 3 p.m.
