Five Spartans Earn Summer League All-Star Honors

Five members of the Michigan State baseball team have been recognized for their performances in their respective summer leagues by earning all-star honors.
Sophomore-to-be Bryan Gale (Decatur, Mich.) is playing for the Bluff City Bombers of the Central Illinois League. The right-handed hurler owns a 7-1 record with a 1.25 ERA. He also has a current stretch of 32 consecutive scoreless innings. In 2001, Gale led the Spartan staff with a 9-1 record and a 3.53 ERA en route to earning Louisville Slugger Freshman All-America honors.
Senior-to-be Kyle Geswein (Dayton, Ohio) is playing for the Staunton Braves of the Valley Baseball League in Virginia. The designated hitter earned all-star accolades with a .299 batting average with nine home runs and a league-leading 34 RBI. Geswein has also seen time on the pitching mound, posting a 1-2 record and a 5.03 ERA in 10 appearances, including two starts. In 2001, Geswein hit .297 with eight home runs and 35 RBI.
Junior-to-be Ryan Golem (Dearborn, Mich.) is playing for the Motor City Marauders of the Great Lakes League. The right-handed pitcher owns a 3.50 ERA and a 3-6 record. In 2001, Golem appeared in nine contests, posting a 2-0 record.
Junior-to-be Bob Malek (Detroit, Mich.) is spending the summer with the Chatham Athletics of the Cape Cod Baseball League. The outfielder owns a .260 batting average with one home run and 20 RBI in the wooden bat league. This past season, Malek sit a MSU single-season record with 88 hits while also posting a .427 average. For his efforts, he earned All-America honors from by the American Baseball Coaches Association.
Senior-to-be Don Watchowski (Shelby Township, Mich.) is playing for the St. Joseph Saints in the Mink Baseball League in St. Joseph, Mo. Watchowski is batting .340 with four home runs and a Mink League record 75 RBI. In 2001, Watchowski hit .226 with one home run and five RBI at MSU last season.
Michigan State is hoping the five all-stars will use the momentum of their summer performances to help improve a Spartan squad which posted a 29-27 record in 2001. The Spartans will return 22 letterwinners including seven position starters.
