EAST LANSING, Mich. - Sophomore Tim Hearon (Southgate, Mich.) scored the lone goal of the game and freshman Matt Migliaccio (Wyandotte, Mich.) outdueled 2001 Hobey Baker Award winner Ryan Miller (East Lansing, Mich.) as the Green team beat the White team 1-0 in front of 1,500 fans at the MSU hockey annual intrasquad scrimmage at Munn Ice Arena tonight (Friday).
Hearon's goal came 3:55 into the third period. Sophomore defenseman Joe Markusen (Park River, N.D.) held at White clearing attempt in the offensive zone and dumped the puck toward the goalmouth. Hearon picked up the bounding biscuit and tapped it past a handcuffed Miller.
Migliaccio stopped nine shots, as opposed to six for Miller, in a busy first period. The freshman made six saves to Miller's five in the second. Miller turned aside eight shots in the third period for a three-period total of 18 while Migliaccio made seven saves in the final stanza for a game total of 22.
Neither team capitalized on their power-play opportunities. The Green squad had two extra-man opportunities while the White unit had four power-play chances.
MSU returns to action tomorrow (Saturday) when they host Queen's University in an exhibition match at Munn Ice Arena. Faceoff is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. ET.
