Baseball Takes Exhibition Game, 14-5

East Lansing, Mich. - The Michigan State baseball team took to the field Sunday afternoon at Kobs Field for an exhibition game with the Toronto Blue Jays Amateur team where they won by a score of 14-5. MSU used a six-run sixth inning and a five-run seventh to get the win.
Bob Malek (Jr., Canton) doubled down the right field line to score Chris McCuiston (Sr., Birmingham) and put MSU on the board in the first. The Blue Jays responded in the third, tying the game, 1-1.
A two-out single by Jared Koutnik (Sr., Milwaukee, Wis.) in the fifth scored James Deliz (Fr., Clinton Twp.) to give the Spartans the lead, 2-1. Randy Ortiz (So., Rochester) delivered a two-RBI single in the bottom half of the sixth inning, building State's lead to 4-1. They would score four more runs off three hits to take an 8-1 lead into the seventh.
MSU tacked on five more runs in the seventh inning, highlighted by a McCuiston grand-slam. McCuiston finished they day 3-for-5 with 6 RBI.
The Jays scored two runs in the eighth off two hits and two more in the ninth while State added one in the bottom of the eighth inning, making the final score, 14-5.
The Spartans used nine pitchers in the win, as they combined for 11 strikeouts while surrendering 8 hits. Mike Salling (Sr., Mesick) was the winning pitcher for MSU.
Sunday's game was State's only exhibition game of the fall, they will begin the regular season February 22, 2002 in Las Vegas when they take on UC Santa Barbara.
