EAST LANSING, Mich. - Baseball head coach Ted Mahan announced the hiring of new assistant coach, Joe Fletcher, Monday (Jan. 7) afternoon. Fletcher will be in charge of the Spartans' pitching staff. He brings 10 years of collegiate coaching experience to the Michigan State baseball program having spent the last three seasons as an assistant coach at Jacksonville University and the prior seven years at St. Joseph's University in Indiana. While at Jacksonville, Fletcher helped lead the Dolphins to two NCAA regional appearances in 1999 and 2001. The Dolphins also won a total of 118 games during his three seasons.
Fletcher spent five seasons playing professional baseball, playing four seasons with the New York Yankees organization and one season with the Montreal Expos organization.
"I am extremely excited to get back up north, this is where I belong," Fletcher said. "I have always wanted to be a part of Michigan State University and it has been something I have been looking forward to for a while."
"I have high hopes for this season. We have a team and pitching staff that can challenge for the Big Ten title. We are going to have to get a lot of work done in a short period of time and I am looking forward to preparing for the upcoming season."
Fletcher replaces former MSU assistant Greg Gunderson, who resigned in the off-season to pursue other career opportunities.
