EAST LANSING, Mich. - Fueled by a three-run rally in the bottom of the sixth inning, the Green team came back to defeat the Gray squad, 9-8, in game two of the Green/Gray World Series at Kobs Field. The victory means that the Green team - which won game one, 13-9 - wins the best-of-three series, but game three will still take place Wednesday afternoon (Oct. 16) at Kobs Field beginning at 3:30 p.m.
Prior to the start of the sixth inning, head coach Ted Mahan announced it would be the last inning for pitching concerns. The Gray team was up 8-6 going into the bottom of the inning, and it appeared the series was heading for a decisive game three. However, the Green team battled back for the win. Ryan Kurtz (Jr., Toledo) started the rally by scoring on an Erik Morris (So., Orchard Lake) RBI single. Morris would later score on a throwing error to tie the game at eight apiece. With a runner on third and two outs, the next two batters were intentionally walked, bringing Randy Ortiz (Jr., Rochester) up to the plate. Ortiz responded by blasting a shot to center field, knocking home the winning run.
Tim Day (So., West Chester, Ohio) - who set a new MSU mark for wins in season with 11 in 2001 -started where he left off last year, tossing three scoreless innings for the Gray team. Also for the Gray team, Brady Burrill (Sr., Newhall, Calif.) had two doubles and two RBI.
For the Green team, John Dwan (Fr., Libertyville, Ill.) had two hits, including a double and an RBI, while Dennis Richardson (Fr., Rochester Hills) had two doubles.
