EAST LANSING, Mich. - Under monsoon-like conditions, the Michigan State women's soccer team defeated Ohio State, 3-2, Friday (Oct. 4) afternoon at Old College Field. The win improves the Spartans' record to 8-2, 4-1 in the Big Ten, while Ohio State falls to 3-6-1 overall and 1-2-1 in conference play. After playing a majority of the first half in wet conditions, the rain and wind picked up in the second half, forcing a 10 minute delay.
MSU goalkeeper Stacy Heller (Jr., Madison, Wis.) came up big for the Green and White, making several key stops late in the second half. She finished the game with 14 saves. OSU outshot MSU, 23-10, for the game.
"That is one of those games where you walk off the field and you don't really know how you won it, but you did," said MSU head coach Tom Saxton. "We'll take wins any way we can."
The Buckeyes came out fast in the early going of the first half, but were unable to solve Heller. The Spartans got on the scoreboard at the 37:54 mark when a corner kick by Ashley Lawson (So., Burlington, ONT) curved just enough and found its way into the back of the net to give MSU a 1-0 lead. State scored once more before the end of the half, when Tiffany Laskowski (Jr., Troy) scored on a header off a corner kick in the 44th minute. Michelle Perun (Jr., Rochester) drew the lone assist on the goal.
Ohio State outshot MSU by a count of 7-5 in the first half.
The Buckeyes trimmed the Spartans lead to 2-1 at the 68:25 mark when Collen Hoban scored off a rebound. With the rain falling harder, the Buckeyes continued to apply offensive pressure in the Spartan half of the field, but the in the 85th minute, MSU's Emma Harris (Fr., Portage) sprung loose down the center of the field and beat OSU goalkeeper Emily Haynam to put the Spartans ahead, 3-1.
OSU didn't give up, however, as Sarah Lanham headed the ball into the net less than one minute later, making the final score 3-2.
The Spartans return to action, Sunday (Oct. 6), when they host Penn State at 1:00 p.m. at Old College Field.
