Men's Golf Crowned Champions At Adams Cup

NEWPORT, R. I. - The No. 23 Michigan State men's golf team finished first out of 17 teams at the Adams Cup of Newport, Wednesday (Oct. 9, 2002) at the Newport Country Club. The Spartans began the day by completing the second round where they shot a score of 295. Michigan State followed that effort with a final-round score of 282, which gave the Spartans a tournament score of 873 (296-295-282).
The Adams Cup of Newport marks Michigan State's second straight tournament win, as the Spartans tied for first at the Wolverine Invitational (Oct.6).
"It's been an awesome back-to-back performance by our team in two good golf tournaments," said a satisfied MSU coach Mark Hankins. "It was a total team effort by all five guys in the final round."
The Spartans were led by senior co-captain John Koskinen (Baraga, Mich.), who carded an even score of 70 in the final round, and tied for 10th overall with a tournament score of 217 (74-73-70).
Senior All-American Eric Jorgensen (Big Rapids, Mich.) and junior Casey Lubahn (Sand Lake, Mich.) tied for 12th place, as they each recorded tournament scores of 218.
Junior Ben Fox (Fort Wayne, Ind.) fired the team's lowest round of the tournament as he carded a final-round score of 69. Fox tied for 19th place with a tournament score of 220 (75-76-69). Sophomore Andrew Ruthkoski (Muskegon, Mich.) rounded out the tournament with a score of 229 (79-78-72).
The No. 23 Spartans return to action at the Duke Golf Classic, Oct 21-22 in Durham, N.C.
