Women's Tennis Trounces South Florida, 7-0

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - The Michigan State women's tennis team won convincingly dropping South Florida, 7-0, Sunday (March. 10). The Green and White swept the Bulls in singles competition and took two of three doubles matches to improve to 8-6 on the season.
In doubles play, sophomores Caroline Lay (Brisbane, Australia) and Trine Lise Juliussen (Oslo, Norway) claimed a close 8-6 victory at the No. 2 position. The No. 3 team of junior Asa Liden (Vandersborg, Sweden) and freshman Dora Vastag (Okemos, Mich.) won a tight 9-8(0) contest, preserving the doubles point. MSU has won the doubles point in 10 of 14 matches this season.
In singles action, MSU ran the table, by winning all six matches, four of which came in straight sets. Lay registered a 6-1, 6-1 victory in the No. 3 flight, earning a team-high 18th win. In the top flight Vastag dropped the first set, but bounced back to win 3-6, 6-3, 6-3. Liden also rallied from behind at the No. 2 flight, winning her 13th match of the season, 6-7(5), 6-2, 6-3. Juliussen, Keri Thompson (Clark Lake, Mich.), and Mandy Caldemeyer (Grand Rapids, Mich.) all won straight-set decisions to round out the sweep in singles play.
The Spartans concluded their four-game Florida trip, with a 2-2 record.
MSU opens a five-game home stand Saturday, March 16, when the Spartans will host Minnesota. The Spartans will also play Sunday, March. 17, against No. 36 Wisconsin. Both matches will be held at the MSU Indoor Tennis facility and are scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
